I came to this bar hoping to catch up with friends I hadn’t seen in a long time. Regardless of the drinks themselves, the service alone made this an extremely unpleasant experience.
We sat at our seats for quite a while without being given a menu or even coasters. At first, we assumed that perhaps this was the kind of bar where the bartender preferred to make drinks based on customers’ preferences, so we asked him for a recommendation. Instead, we were met with an extremely cold and dismissive response.
Even when our drinks arrived, we still had not been given coasters, nor had our oshibori been cleared away. The oshibori itself smelled quite bad, possibly because it had been sitting there for too long. What made this especially uncomfortable was that customers who arrived after us were immediately provided with menus, coasters, and oshibori as soon as they sat down.
What bothered me most, however, was the bartender’s behavior while making our drinks. He made an excessive amount of noise—for example, slamming ice down hard and deliberately knocking the bar spoon against the glass. I have been to many bars, including plenty in Tokyo, and I have never experienced noise at this level. More importantly, when he prepared drinks for customers who arrived after us, he was noticeably quieter. The contrast was so obvious that it was difficult not to feel that the noise directed at us was intentional.
The only possible reason I can think of for this treatment is that my female friend did not immediately close the door when we entered. If that was indeed the reason, then the level of pettiness is astonishing. The bartender also spoke to my female friend using an unnecessarily commanding form in Japanese when telling her to close the door. The way he addressed her came across as extremely disrespectful, particularly toward a female customer.
Overall, the entire experience was awful. I had simply wanted to spend a pleasant evening catching up with friends I had not seen in a long time, and I genuinely regret bringing them to this bar.
I would not return.
